Are external influences impacting your thoughts?

Sitting down to write a newsy email in January probably wasn’t my brightest idea, in fairness. It’s hard when you’re in front of a blank screen these days not to succumb to talking about the pandemic or the January blues.

Added to that, one of the dates I hate most in the year was yesterday, also known as Blue Monday. This date doesn’t bother me for what it represents, it’s the fact that there even is a date that people are told is allegedly the most depressing day of the year, where they are told to expect to feel blue!

Given the state of the world currently, do we really need a reminder that one day should ‘feel’ worse than another? Probably not! But regardless, if you believe, as I do, that we create our own reality, then being subjected to a date that celebrates being blue, or sad, is just all kinds of wrong!

It’s all too easy for me to say to simply ignore it and just get on with your day, but the truth is, that with the removal of our normal daily distractions, we are actually far more susceptible now to letting external influences impact on our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Normally, there’s nothing I love more than having every radio in the house blaring so that it feeds my current affairs addiction. But I have to confess that in the last few months, I’ve started to re-tune the dial and Lyric FM is more likely to be what meets me now when I walk in to each room. I honestly cannot describe the profound difference it has made especially first thing in the morning.

Let’s be honest here, so many of us are guilty of reaching for our phones before we are even fully awake in the mornings. Am I right? It’s also a default motion that we switch on the radio to hear what’s been happening when we were asleep.

What we are overlooking when we do this, is the reality that, what we allow into our minds and our energetic fields first thing is what sets
up how we think and feel for the remainder of the day.

Simply put, if you wake up to more anxiety-inducing news you are going to spend the rest of the day fighting off those thoughts. At the risk of sounding a little like Pollyanna, now, when I wake up, I put some relaxing music on, do some journaling or a short meditation (usually all from the comfort of my bed)and then when I’m ready to throw my legs out of the bed, I know I’ve given myself the best chance I can to tackle whatever lies ahead.

It’s a simple trick, and it is a trick, but it is a highly effective one, so please try it.

Navigating life is testing all of us these days, the strong and the less so, none of us are immune, but just don’t allow external influences tell you just HOW you’re going to think or feel at any time of the day. Limit your exposure to the bad news, while staying informed, and open yourself up more to the fluffier simpler way of life.

In keeping with that, I’m going to keep this newsletter email short this week, I just wanted to say hello and let you all know that I’m thinking of you!
